Acne is caused when our sebaceous (oil) glands fill up with too much sebum and dead skin cells become clogged and inflamed. Typically, once the swelling goes down, you’re left with a red mark or (post acne hyperpigmentation) and in some cases acne scarring. In this blog I’ll mention the main factors that lead to acne as well as, the sneaky causes that can exacerbate acne.
There are four main factors that cause acne:
- Oil production
- Dead skin cells
- Clogged pores
- Bacteria: Propioni-bacterium acnes
- Hormones: Increased levels of the hormone androgen during puberty as well as hormonal changes related to pregnancy.
- Certain Medications: drugs containing androgens, lithium or corticosteroids can also worsen acne.
However, there are things we may take, apply, ingest or utilize without realizing how they can worsen breakouts. Here’s a list to help you be more aware and proactive when it comes to fighting acne.
